Well we may not be everyone's favorite core drillers, maybe we are, there never been a poll, we sure hope that the city's of Durham and Chapel Hill like us because we just put a 4-inch hole through their sludge thickening building for new electric lines to power the newest in innovation in water treatment. As witnessed the BlueFlag core drill bit cut a perfect hole through the wall that was exposed after Dominion Energy dug it out for access. it did not take long to core drill the hole with our bit, about 7 minutes once the rig, water and power was set up.

This is a 12-inch core drill bit putting a hole in a manhole on Center St., Hickory, North Carolina. Usually, a 12-inch hole is not that difficult to core into the side of a round manhole with our equipment. But even this one put our Milwaukee core drill motor to the test as we had to drill a new drainage trough through the bottom of the water basin to the existing water channel inside the prefabbed manhole. As can be seen, our special rig can be mounted upside down as we perform the core drilling for the 8-inch plumbing drainage pipe to be inserted into the hole with a rubber sealing boot to once we are done.

best to watch this with safety glasses already on. When using this method of sharpening your core drill bit please take all precautions. In the Picture is a grinder and the video is one of the crew sharpening a 7 inch core bit. what you want to do is make scores across the diamond embedded teeth, not to many but just enough to be able to let new metal become exposed and wear away as the core drill bit cuts the concrete hole. The hammer method is not quite as effective but works just a well in a pinch.

    vacuum-pump-for-core-drilling
A vacuum pump is the unique way that a core drill operator can suck down a core drilling rig to a concrete floor. This method is preferred when core drilling most smooth concrete floors. The vacuum pump sits on the core drill rig usually between the two wheels if the rig is so equipped. A soft suction foam ring lines a channel on the bottom of the core drill rig. On top of the rig is an opening that allows the vacuum pump to suck out the air trapped inside the ring on bottom, thus making suction to the concrete possible.

This was one mean wall. It had within its contents close to 14 pieces of rebar embedded into the concrete of the this parking garage on greene st, Greensboro, North Carolina. We took almost 48 minutes to core drill this 10 inch hole in the wall. Luckily we had our trusty small core drilling rig with us so that we could mount to the concrete wall with ease. The core weighed almost 60 lbs, which was enough to drag down the motor of our milwaukee 4004-20 core drill motor, but of course not it was not quite tough enough.

This is our work truck again, this time back in Concord, NC. This particular project involved core drilling through the shop floor of this former transmission shop on church street north. After we get done making a 4" hole in the floor a machine comes in and pounds segments of plastic tube some 30 feet into the ground. This allows the dirt under the old car shop to be sent off to a lab where they will come back with a verdict of whether the ground was contaminated or not by the work of changing truck and car transmissions.

This is a small residential project we underwent in York, SC where we core drilled 4 six inch core drill holes through stamped concrete. The hole nearest in the center of the stamped concrete patio was 14 inches deep which meant that we had to drill down through the foundation underneath the stamped concrete to reach the dirt below which is what the homeowner wanted. Then they were to set 4 wood 4 x 4 columns in the holes upon which the cast fiberglass column over it for support.

    core-drilling-a-cement-block-wall
This is a small core drilling job we did in Morrisville, NC, which is a small suburb of Raleigh, NC. The 5 inch core drill holes in the block wall were for new gas lines at the newly constructed Duke medical center on Arlington Dr. Most cement block walls are poured with concrete and rebar every other block or 16 inches, sometimes every 24 inches depending the load weigh of the wall itself. The height of this particular hole on the wall made it a great project to teach some core drilling skills to one of our young core drill operators that is eager to learn the trade.
